With increasing pressure on tradies to not only deliver quality work but also manage clients, finances and business operations, starting a trade business has become more complex than ever. Many skilled tradespeople move into business ownership without fully understanding what it takes to run a successful and sustainable small business.
This course is designed to support tradies who are considering starting their own business, or who have recently taken that step. It builds your understanding of business structures, financial considerations, legal requirements and the day-to-day realities of running a trade business. Through real-world scenarios, case studies and practical reflection activities, you will explore what business ownership looks like and whether it aligns with your goals, skills and lifestyle.
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
- compare the various small business options for trade businesses
- compare the roles and responsibilities of business owners versus tradespeople
- identify considerations to support business set up including legislative and financial requirements
- identify sources of information to support business set up
- evaluate personal business readiness against key skills, attributes and environmental factors beneficial to running a successful small business
As you progress through the course, interactive activities, real trade-based scenarios and self-reflection tasks will help you apply what you’ve learned to your own situation. Upon successful completion of the assessment quiz and feedback activity, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Participants are required to complete the course within the TAFE NSW LMS. There is currently no option available to host courses on external LMS platforms.
If you would like to purchase courses for your staff (less than 10), each participant will need to complete the checkout process separately (e.g. select the “ADD TO CART” button for the desired course or courses, and then continue through the checkout process). The participant’s details are to be entered in the “ACCOUNT DETAILS” section. The relevant credit card details can then be entered in the credit card payment section. The screenshot below shows an example of the checkout screen and where to enter this information.
The details entered in the “ACCOUNT DETAILS” section will be used to create an account for the participant. The participant will then receive a confirmation email with login instructions. If the course is a paid course, they will also receive an invoice for your records.
If the same PC or device is being used to process multiple orders, please ensure you are logged out after each order is complete.
